Native shrubs are dominating Northwest Arkansas landscapes in 2025 and beyond. Whether they’re for adding privacy to your backyard, or increasing curb appeal in the front, there are countless options to choose from. In this article we cover 5 popular options for residential and commercial landscapes.
1. Oklahoma Redbud
The Oklahoma Redbud leads the pack, offering spectacular spring blooms and compact growth perfect for smaller yards. These shrubs typically reach 6-8 feet in height and thrive in both full sun and partial shade.
2. American Beautyberry
American Beautyberry has surged in popularity, particularly in Bentonville and Rogers areas. Its distinctive purple berries persist through winter, providing food for birds while adding visual interest to winter landscapes. The shrub requires minimal maintenance and adapts well to the region’s clay soils.
3. Smooth Hydrangea
Smooth Hydrangea continues its strong presence in Northwest Arkansas gardens, with newer cultivars bred specifically for heat tolerance. These shrubs produce large white blooms from June through September and perform exceptionally well in shadier spots along house foundations.
4. Winterberry Holly
Winterberry Holly has gained significant traction as homeowners seek year-round interest. Female plants produce bright red berries that persist through winter, while both male and female varieties offer excellent screening properties. Local nurseries report consistently strong sales, particularly in Fayetteville’s growing suburbs.
5. Witch Hazel
The Arkansas native Witch Hazel rounds out the top five, prized for its unique late winter blooms and fall foliage. These larger shrubs, reaching heights of 10-15 feet, have become increasingly popular for creating natural privacy screens.
